    General and Annual Conference Update

    General and Annual Conference Update

The Executive Committee of the Commission on the General Conference announced Wednesday, March 18, that the 2020 General Conference has been postponed due to crowd size restrictions in place to help stave the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19. For more info, visitctcumc.org/news. As of this time, no new date or location for General Conference has been announced. The Commission is scheduled to meet via conference call Saturday, March 21. Any updates related to GC2020 will be shared via the conference website and Facebook page as that information becomes available.

Currently, the decision to postpone General Conference has no bearing on the conference’s plan for the 2020 Annual Conference meeting. The Central Texas Conference Cabinet has compiled the following brief FAQ to assist you should you get questions from your church and/or community related to Annual Conference. This FAQ will be updated as more information is available.

Does the postponement of General Conference 2020 mean that we will have to postpone the 2020 CTC Annual Conference?

At this time, plans regarding the dates, times and location for the 2020 Central Texas Annual Conference have not changed. We are still scheduled for June 14-17 at White’s Chapel UMC in Southlake, Texas. Registration for Annual Conference opened yesterday and can be accessed atwww.ctcumc.org/ac20registration.

What’s the point of holding Annual Conference if the General Conference hasn’t met?

Annual Conference is a yearly meeting, General Conference is a quadrennial gathering. The Central Texas Annual Conference has much to celebrate and business to conduct that isn’t directly affected by the postponement of General Conference. While we realize that a decision on “The Protocol” or other separation legislation may be top of mind for many members to Annual Conference, we have budgets to set, ministries to celebrate and support, clergy to commission and ordain, offices to fill, and on and on. The ministries of the conference, our local churches and clergy continue!

What will happen to Annual Conference if civil and health organization guidelines and mandates are still in effect on June 14?

The Annual Conference will comply with any local, county, state or federal orders or mandates. We will also seriously consider all recommendations from government and health organizations regarding taking the necessary steps and measures to control and/or stop the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19. Conference leadership will continue to monitor this constantly evolving situation and make a decision on whether or not to postpone AC20 based on what is best for the health and well-being of the members of Annual Conference and our communities at large. Regular updates will continue to be posted on the conference website and Facebook page.

When will conference leadership make the call on whether or not to postpone Annual Conference?

Too many variables remain for us to determine if and when a decision to postpone Annual Conference would be announced. If a decision to postpone becomes necessary, it will be communicated as early as possible prior to the scheduled June 14 start of AC20. Regular updates will continue to be posted on the conference website and Facebook page.
