Introducing Neighborhood Table
by katie lewis
Over the past several years our church has hosted a weekly Wednesday night dinner called Wesley Meal. Due to several factors, including low attendance and difficulty getting groups to sign up to prepare a meal, it was apparent that our church needed to make a change. Over the course of several months, we formed a committee, conducted a church wide survey and prayed for God’s guidance. The committee cast a vision with pastors, followed by several meetings with the Executive Board. From all of that work, we developed a new plan that breathes new life into this beloved ministry.
This year, our weeknight meal ministry will be designed to more intentionally engage our community. It will be held once a month, and we will call it Neighborhood Table.
The Neighborhood Table will happen on the second Wednesday of each month from 6:00-7:00 p.m. This meal will be free to first-time guests and the people from our city and community we will honor each month. Members of the church are encouraged to continue to make the love offering of $6 per person (up to $18 per family). Members who can give more to offset the “comped” meals will be most welcome to do so.
The meal for the Neighborhood Table will continue to be provided by ministries and missions of the church who seek to use the meal as a way to raise funds.
Each month we will invite and honor a different community organization and bless them with some type of gift that meets a need for their organization. Several community organizations we hope to recognize include GRACE (in October), the Colleyville Police Department (November), and the Colleyville Fire Department (December).
We believe Neighborhood Table aligns with our vision to be outwardly focused and engage the local community. We also feel it will help us get to know our neighbors better.
Reducing the number of Wednesday Night Meals to once a month came from the survey (104 people participated) where 70% of the people said once or twice a month was more than enough.
However, because there is a strong need for fellowship in our church, we will offer an additional opportunity to come and eat together. One Sunday a month will be set aside for a church wide breakfast or lunch. Groups who depend upon Wednesday Wesley Meal for fund raising will have the potential of serving a much larger number of people.
Missions and ministries can provide the meal of their choice, charge like we have on Wednesdays, with the proceeds from those meals going to support that mission or ministry. Breakfast will be served from 9:30 to 10:45. Lunch will be served from 12:15 – 1:30. On the fifth Sundays of the month, we will combine 11 and 11:11 services in the sanctuary allowing the Event Center and kitchen to be used for serving and seating people at the meals. On other Sundays, the meals may be served in the Narthex or outside (picnic-style).
Our first Neighborhood Table meal is on Wednesday September 12 from 6:00-7:00 p.m., and this month we will honor Mercy House. September’s meal is hosted by our Missions Team, and the menu is chicken spaghetti, salad, bread, and desserts. During the meal, the Mercy House Executive Director will share an update about Mercy House. Our church will also present a $1000 Harmon Vocational Scholarship to one of the Mercy House residents to assist with her schooling. Thanks to a private donation, church members are asked to bring newborn baby diapers and wipes instead of money to cover the cost of the meal. These items were specifically requested by Mercy House.
Open dates for the fall semester of Neighborhood Table include Wednesday October 10, Wednesday November 14, and Wednesday December 12.
Open dates for the Sunday breakfast or lunch (your group gets to choose whether it is breakfast or lunch) include Sunday September 30 and Sunday December 30. On Sunday October 21, the church staff will provide breakfast tacos for the church from 9:45-10:45 in the narthex.
We are excited for what God is doing in this new ministry and we are hopeful that it will help us serve and engage our community more fully! We hope you will be supportive by rallying your church groups together to prepare a delicious meal for our church and neighbors. If you have any questions, concerns, or words of encouragement please feel free to contact Pastor Mike at email@example.com or Pastor Katie at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (817) 281-5254.
Grace and Peace,
