“With you, I have watched today’s mob assault on the U.S. Capitol with horror and revulsion. We are a country built on the rule of law, not a nation run by mobs. We came into being as a city on hill to be a light to the nations. Legal protest is an honored part of our national ethos. Mob rule is an evil violation of our moral standards and a corruption of our national character.
For whichever candidate you voted, whatever your party of persuasion, I ask us together to be followers of the Prince of Peace.
Let not hatred rule.
Let not evil and violence triumph.
Let not arrogance of conviction govern our response.
Rather, may our witness be one of peace and justice tempered with mercy.
I look to the people of the Central Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church to remember the words of Christ, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
Let us actively live the admonitions of Holy Scripture. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. … “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to” God. (Matthew 5:14, 16) “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)”
